When getting directions in Australia you might hear someone say “chuck a left here”.
Translated to GPS, the literal definition might be something like “at the next intersection, turn left”.
Only, because it’s Australia the “chuck” is a bit more casual, a bit more daring and a lot more unplanned.
A chuck is unlikely to be part of an elaborately detailed and perfectly laid out plan. Instead, it’s based on reading a given situation, taking into account all of the factors in that moment and responding accordingly.
Because of this, a chuck is often surprising to the recipient. It’s a pattern interrupt.
Which is why we can learn a lot from the chuck.
The next time you’re tempted to do something the same way you’ve always done it, ask yourself:
What would it look like to chuck a left?

Hat tip to my friend Lisa for the noodle.
